Don't Forget About Gulf Coast Citizens Now That Oil Isn't Spilling

More posts by TheGCCCJ 7/28/2010 11:30:00 PM

For the time being, BP has stanched the oil spill. Americans can now watch the nightly news and they won't have to look at live video of oil gushing into the Gulf of Mexico.

While the oil was still spilling, I would sometimes get a faint queasy feeling in my stomach while watching live video of the geyser that spewed millions of gallons of toxic chemicals (oil and dispersant) from the bottom of the gulf - for now, I no longer get that sickening feeling.

And since that has happened, I feel like Americans are starting to lose sight of the plight that still faces Gulf Coast citizens. Gulf Coast residents will be in need of relief for months, most likely years to come. Residents along the Gulf Coast will still need your help even after BP finishes the relief well that will stop the oil spill for good.

What can you do to help Gulf Coast residents?

Sypheria the Book

More posts by sypheria 4/27/2010 1:00:00 AM

My novel, Sypheria, is a heart racing thriller that will make Americans take a second look at what they stand for, it burns the fires of liberty inside them, and make them evaluate what is truly worth fighting for.
Pronounced (sy-fear-ia), the name is a derivative stemmed from the word “Seraph” in the bible, Isaiah 6:2-6:7. “Above him were Seraphs, each with six wings, with two wings that covered their faces, two that covered their feet, and with two they were flying."
Sypheria is a book that takes readers into a non stop, gut wrenching, high intensity journey on American and foreign soil from start to finish. Identified by levels instead of chapters, for the constantly rising intensity and complexity of the story, Sypheria is sure to be a change up from the normality of what people are reading these days.
Taking place in the year 2010, an attack on America has once again occurred but now in a much more treacherous and devious way. Not nuclear or chemical weapons but something much more devastating long term, pure fear. Osama Bin Laden once said, terrorism is our goal, and it is not just the destruction aspect, the destruction is good, but if we can make them fear and crawl like animals and disrupt their way of living we will win this war!
A series of attacks aimed to make the souls of the American people shutter has the country in turmoil. A group named “Sypheria”, who had been retired for the past five years, the government’s best from each branch of the military, decides themselves to take action and arises when the time for them is needed.
Sypheria helps to restore order but they soon discover that the American President is no longer capable of running the country and decide to take action themselves.
They begin hunting down all the suspected Al Qaeda cells in America but become fugitives themselves because it’s not the politically correct thing to do in the eyes of the current administration.
They discover a nuclear bomb in the possession of one of the cells and stop the plot and kill the members before they can conduct their symphony of destruction.
Sypheria are now viewed as heroes in the public eye and there is even mention of a third party developing in the country, The Sypherian Party.
The Sypherians travel to the Hindu Kush Mountains in Afghanistan and capture Osama Bin Laden themselves in one year’s time.
By the time they return home they find themselves thrown into a civil war that’s occurring in the states and a horrific group called The Amontants has risen up promising restoration but as they themselves reveal they are what was known before hand as the shadow government. The repercussions of citizen’s disobedience to their charismatic leader ends not just in bloodshed but in terrifying displays of power and merciless killings and examples to be seen by all.

Fear from the foreign invaders and terrorists now seem like a distant memory and the people would much rather deal with that then this new, oppressive, and brutal army which is close to seizing power, with such quotes to the president like “We are the ones who put you in and we are the one who will now take you out.”
Sypheria has no choic but to cease power declaring this the U.S.S.A, “The United Sypherian States of America , and struggle to maintain power and to show the people the true meaning of their slogan and life saying, “May Providence Prevail.”

Coffee Party Organizing to Lobby Congress

More posts by chrisolson 3/24/2010 2:11:00 PM

The next National Coffee Party Summit will convene this weekend and participants will discuss how Congress can improve the legislative process. Planning for "Coffee with Congress" will also take place at Coffee Party meetings. The upcoming National Coffee Summit will be the second organized by The Coffee Party USA.

Over 350 coffee parties were held in 44 states during the first National Coffee Party Summit. Americans living abroad also held parties. Coffee Party USA founder Annabel Park told CNN she was pleased with the discussion that took place during the last National Coffee Party Summit. "There was passion and excitement [at the coffee parties] about what the Coffee Party could become politically and personally."

Participants in the next National Coffee Party Summit will have the chance to build on the success of the first summit. Many participants in that summit voiced concerns about the deficiencies in America’s legislative process. Coffee Party attendees will have the chance to come together in a civil manner and discuss the steps our elected officials can take to improve the legislative process.

National Coffee Party Summit participants will also organize Coffee with Congress meetings in their Congress member's district offices. Coffee with Congress will take place during Congress member's Easter recess. Congress member's traditionally meet with constituents in their district offices during Easter recess. Coffee with Congress participants are being encouraged to bring coffee and donuts to their Congress member's offices and tell them about the Coffee Party movement. Coffee Party participants also are also being encouraged to talk about your suggestions for improving the legislative process.

Click on the link below to find to find a Coffee Party near you. You can also follow the link if you're interested in organizing a Coffee Party in your area.

The Coffee Party Movement Needs You

More posts by chrisolson 3/15/2010 10:49:00 PM

I attended two coffee parties in Arlington, VA and Washington, DC this past Saturday that were organized by The Coffee Party USA. These meetings were just what I needed at this time. I've felt myself becoming disillusioned with American government and have thought about entering the ranks of apathetic voters. I've been able to fight the urge to give up on our political system. I would ask myself this question when thinking about giving up: What good would that do?

I don't think I'll need to worry about becoming apathetic towards America's political process after attending Coffee Party meetings. I've actually found groups of Americans that want to put politics aside and focus on the process of running government. It's amazing.

The Coffee Party movement is something I've felt brewing in America (pardon the awful pun) for some time now. Americans are awakening to the reality that partisan politicians are not looking out for the best interest of The People. Reasonable Americans feel like they're being left out of the political process. The Coffee Party movement believes The People are ready to take the reins bridled on our democracy from the hands of political extremists.

Americans feel like unreasonable people have too much influence on our government. I know many who had disconcerting feelings after witnessing the abhorrent level of discourse that took place during last summer's town hall meetings. The images of angry Americans that appeared on television screens were imperfect snapshots of the American electorate. The Tea Party does not speak for reasonable Americans.

The Tea Party and extremist conservative Republicans aren't the only groups polluting the American political landscape. Extreme liberal Democrats are also preventing Americans from participating in civil political discourse. The Coffee Party wants to give a voice to Americans who are tired of political extremists shouting over us.

The Coffee Party movement wants elected officials and media to stop paying attention to politics and start focusing on the process of running government. The Coffee Party wants elected officials to act on The People's will and fulfill promises made during campaigns. The Coffee Party wants to hold politicians and media accountable.

Americans can now have hope that change will happen if they get involved with the Coffee Party movement. The Coffee Party USA has the potential to lead a movement that will bring change to Washington. This movement can be change in action.

The Coffee Party movement will inevitably go through growing pains. This new movement is unprecedented in the history of Western democracy. That being said, I still have hope that the Coffee Party movement will succeed. We all want to change - politicians and The People. Let's make it happen!

Find a Coffee Party meeting in your area. You probably already go by your local coffee shop at least once a week. You might as well talk government with your friends in a civil manner while you're at the coffee shop. Feel free to drink tea at the meeting if you’re not a coffee drinker.

The Coffee Party is looking for volunteers to run Coffee Party meetings near your home if you'd like to volunteer. You don't have to organize very many people; ten would be enough. You and your friends should get involved with the movement. Make change happen!

Sunlight Foundation's "Cycle of Transparency"

More posts by Grasshopr 3/10/2010 3:34:00 PM

The Sunlight Foundation (we're big fans of Sunlight here at Grasshopr) has been leading the charge to make our government more open and transparent. While there are many high-profile efforts in the area of government transparency, they recognize there's a difference between the concept of transparency and actual implementation of technologies and policies to make it so.

In an effort to help all of us visualize the players, processes and challenges involved in achieving a more transparent government, they've introduced the "Cycle of Transparency" concept and graphic. As you might guess, advocacy organizations, lobbyists, engaged citizens, and, of course, lawmakers play key roles in the process.

Americans for Real Health Care Reform Use Grasshopr to Fight Bill

More posts by chrisolson 3/8/2010 10:34:00 PM

Nine Grasshopr.com members have sent messages to members of Congress telling them their taking the wrong approach on health care reform. If you haven't responded to the action alert sent by the Americans for Real Health Care Reform, please do so now. Voting on the bill is going to happen soon; there's still time to let your elected officials know that they should reconsider passing the bill they're about to vote on.

Both Democrats and Republicans Fail to Act on Budget Problems

More posts by chrisolson 3/1/2010 10:33:00 PM

Robert Samuelson proves once again that he's most likely the smartest guy that enters any room in Washington. Samuelson says the Democrats and Republicans aren't dealing with the US government's worsening budget problems. Both parties aren't turning their rhetoric on the budget into action after campaigning is finished.

Sameulson's piece gives us one more reason to stop voting for either of the two parties. American voters are demanding that our political leaders take care of America's problems and all we see is inaction by the Democrats and Republicans. Why do we continue putting these people into power when they fail to solve our problems? I find it maddening.

King Obama Holds Court

More posts by AFRHCR 2/25/2010 10:31:00 PM

I'm starting to believe Obama actually thinks the power of his words will change Washington. Don't you find that kind of weird?

President Obama was creepily controlling during today's Health Care Summit in Washington. When challenged by Republicans about the Democrats control over more of the time, Obama snidely proclaimed, "I'm the president."

Washington media are all saying the Health Care Summit accomplished next to nothing. WaPo columnist Dana Milbank says the Health Care Summit was the "equivalent of being ordered to wear the dunce cap".

Sleep tight, uninsured Americans.

Are Millennials Progressive or Conservative?

More posts by chrisolson 2/25/2010 10:26:00 PM

Most politically-minded millennials are now in the process of graduating from college. We're charting a course in which to take our careers. Marriage and kids are on our minds; some of us have all ready taken that plunge.

The New Republic's E.J. Dionne also says more millennials are progressive than conservative. He says millennials are more liberal because we trust government more than our parents. What Dionne sees as trust for government amongst millennials is actually apathy for it.

Dionne wrongly pegs me; I'm a centrist. I wouldn't consider myself to be liberal or conservative. Dionne doesn't understand the millennial mind.

I don't think millennials like to label ourselves as being liberal or conservative. Most of us don't believe either party is completely right. Our education has given us valuable political knowledge that says both progressive and conservative views should be considered when making a political decision.

CT Post Op-Ed: People Deserve A Stronger Voice

More posts by CTCCBI 2/24/2010 4:49:00 PM

By John J. Woodcock III

In November 2008, close to 580,000 Connecticut voters said "yes" to a constitutional convention. It was a David vs. Goliath campaign as reflected by the "yes" supporters being outspent by 83-1. A 2008 poll showed Connecticut citizens favoring ballot initiative by 65 percent to 30 percent opposed, with 5 percent undecided. A Hartford Courant article on Oct. 30 announcing the poll results stated "The poll found a correlation between a poor opinion of the General Assembly and support for the ability of citizens to legislate by petition and referendum."

The Connecticut General Assembly has ignored this strong expression of public support for Initiative and Referendum. In the 2009 legislative session, four Initiative and Referendum bills were submitted by legislators. Not one of them received a public hearing, and all died in the Government, Administration and Elections Committee. Yet that same committee gave a public hearing to bills such as "An Act Concerning the State Dance."

Is there a more dramatic example of the General Assembly being unresponsive to the wishes of the Connecticut public?

Connecticut is one of only 19 states without any form of direct democracy. Direct democracy -- namely, Initiative, Referendum and Recall -- comes from the Progressive Era, which began 120 years ago. At that time, Initiative, Referendum and Recall was a direct response to entrenched legislatures being beholden to special interests, such as the railroads, the mining industry and the banking industry. Some would argue that history is repeating itself here in Hartford, and in Washington. Initiative and Referendum is responsible for passing women's suffrage, direct election of United States senators, child safety labor laws, term limits, public financing of elections, medical marijuana, and increasing the minimum wage, to name a few.

Most of our Connecticut elected officials maintain that the present system is working fine, and that legislators are accessible and responsive. If that is so, how do you explain their complete indifference to the 2008 poll results showing 65 percent of Connecticut citizens favoring Initiative and Referendum?

What is documented is that special interest lobbying at our state capitol has increased by 500 percent since 1990. What is also clear is that over one-third of our legislative offices races were uncontested in the 2008 election, and more than 95 percent of incumbents were re-elected. In addition to the obvious entrenchment of our legislators, we see the anemic performances of the public watchdog agencies, the Office of State Ethics, and the State Elections and Enforcement Commission. Both agencies have been substantially enhanced, both in staff and budget, yet enforcement, particularly with the Office of State Ethics, has all but disappeared, especially when compared to its predecessor, the State Ethics Commission. All the while, the public is made aware on a continual basis of frequent missteps by its elected officials.

In October 2008, I debated Attorney General Richard Blumenthal on the constitutional convention question, as well as the issue of citizens having Initiative and Referendum rights. His suggestion at that debate was that the Initiative and Referendum issue should be addressed in the context of a legislative election and not through a constitutional convention. We have heeded the attorney general's advice. A nonpartisan, issue-neutral political action committee called Connecticut Citizens for Ballot Initiative has been formed. The purpose of the committee is to advocate for ballot initiative and to educate the public as to where candidates stand on this critical issue for the 2010 state election this November. Every candidate for state and federal office from all parties will be asked his position on Initiative and Referendum, and we will then publish that position on our Web site, Facebook and other media.

Perhaps in 2011, with a new and more responsive Legislature, the voices of Connecticut citizens will be heard through a long-awaited public hearing on new legislation, which, if made into law, will empower Connecticut citizens and give them a voice in their state government and their state's future.

John J. Woodcock III is chairman of the Connecticut Citizens for Ballot Initiative, a former legislator and former state ethics commissioner.
